A Thumper helps separate elements that will boil off. You can not make cuts based on temperature. You have to rely on your nose and taste. A taller slender design is best to help cool the distillate vapors.

What liquid to use in a thumper? Some people use top layer of tails after cutting the last of the hearts from a previous run because of the flavor. If you have a lot of wash you can use that. Some people put in cheap vodka. Water would be your worst option.

What do the moonshiners do??? They put in high proof. But they insist the intake be one inch from the bottom. The high proof is filled just enough to cover the steam from the intake.
