This in powdered form is used to get the PH level of the mash from an acidic PH level to an alkaline level, for the yeast to be at ideal conditions.  It also hardens the water.  It is used to condition water used in brewing beer, to control the tartness and clarity of wine.

It is the primary ingredient in toothpaste.
